Ultrafiltration water treatment equipment (UF) is used to remove almost all colloidal particles (0.01 to 1.0 microns) and some of the largest dissolved pollutants from water. The pore size of ultrafiltration membrane mainly determines the type and size of pollutants to be removed. Generally, the size of membrane pore ranges from 0.005 to 0.1 microns. Ultrafiltration membrane manufacturers classify each ultrafiltration product as having a specific retained molecular weight, This is a rough measurement of the amount of contaminants removed by a given ultrafiltration membrane. 100000 MWC ultrafiltration membrane means that when water containing a given standard compound with a molecular weight of about 100000 daltons is sent to the ultrafiltration unit, almost all compounds will not pass through the membrane.
Materials with a molecular weight of 100000 daltons have a diameter of 0.05 microns to about 0.08 microns. UF membrane is used to remove almost all colloidal particles (including most pathogenic microorganisms), but most dissolved solids can pass through the membrane without causing problems in downstream or finished water. Ultrafiltration equipment will remove most of the turbidity in water.
