Reagent grade water (RGW) is water suitable for a particular procedure that does not interfere with the specificity, accuracy and precision of the procedure. Separate process definitions (e.g. "RO", "DI", "distillation") are not by themselves sufficient to define the required water quality. The quantitative parameters associated with attempts to standardise descriptions of water quality vary widely between standards bodies and are constantly changing. Many parameters have qualifiers that ultimately meet the requirements of appropriateness and validation as determined by the end user. This makes sense, as a wide variety of applications can have a large impact on the tolerances of pollutant composition and quantity. Therefore, it is not uncommon for water quality parameters to be supplemented by the identification of intended applications, specific pollutant problems and sometimes even purification process identification to ensure that desired results are achieved.
